The lyric idea for this song came on the back of a motorcycle from bandmate Dave Calhoun's imagination on his way home from visiting his terminally ill brother for the last time. He wrote the words down as soon as re reached home, and the next day, emailed it out to the bandmates to see if anyone had an idea for the music.
I read the words and picked up my acoustic guitar. The words were great, and the notes came quickly for me. I had the basic chords and melody down in a matter of a few minutes. The rest of the band didn't see this song as something they felt would fit in with the genre of music a band named "Harvey Headbanger" would play, so I vowed later to record it and release it on my own album.
Take me back, take me back, to a time when we were young
Take me back, take me back, to a place where we had fun
We didn't have much money, but it didn't matter anyway
We used to run around outside, it was just another beautiful day
WHen the sun went down and the lights came on,
We knew it was time to go home
With the thoughts and dreams of what tomorrow brings
It was just another day to roam
Take me back, take me back, to a time when we were young
Take me back, take me back, to a place where we had fun
We'd spend our days with family and friends, or just drivin' down the road
Stop at Otis' store and get a few things more just before he would close
I remember the day when we got a phone line and I loved to hear it ring
There was nothin' to say but it was used every day, but to my Mamma it was everything.
Take me back, take me back, to a time when we were young
Take me back, take me back, to a place where we had fun
The times did change and lives got rearranged with some gone,
but not forgotten.
My Mamma cried when my Daddy died and I watched her hit the bottom
It wasn't long before my Mamma was gone and the years just flew on by
The question's the same every time there's a change with people asking God, "Why?"
Take me back, take me back, to a time when we were young
Take me back, take me back, to a place where we had fun
